How to safely remove black mold with babies present?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Discovery Gardens apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. With my toddler and infant sharing this bathroom, I’m really worried about their health, especially with their allergies. What’s the most effective and safe way to get rid of this for good, considering the humidity here?

The most immediate step is to scrub the visible mold with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Always wear an N95 mask and gloves, ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated, and keep your children completely out of the bathroom during and for at least an hour after the process.

For a persistent issue in a humid Dubai bathroom, surface cleaning often isn't a permanent fix. The high ambient humidity and constant condensation from showers create the perfect environment for mold to return. To prevent recurrence, you must address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider using a dehumidifier. Check that your AC system is properly sized and maintained, as it is your primary tool for controlling indoor humidity year-round.

Given the presence of infants with allergies, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess if the mold has penetrated behind tiles or into the ceiling void, which is common here. A reputable inspector uses moisture meters and, if necessary, can take samples for lab analysis to identify the spore types, which informs the safest, most effective remediation plan for your family's health.
