How to clean and prevent AC vent mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water around the vent in our main bedroom, and I just pulled back the corner of the carpet nearby and found a small patch of black, speckled mold on the concrete underneath. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I’m worried it will spread. What’s the most effective way to clean this up and prevent it from coming back without having to call building maintenance right away?

The AC leak is the primary issue—it's creating the constant moisture that allows mold to grow. Until you fix the source, any cleaning is temporary. For the small patch you found, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective for non-porous concrete. Apply it, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub and dry the area thoroughly. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact.

Preventing its return is entirely about moisture control. The high humidity here, especially in summer, makes this a constant battle. Ensure the AC drain line is not clogged; this is a very common cause of leaks. Keep the AC running at a consistent, reasonable temperature (around 22-24°C) to reduce excessive condensation. Improving airflow in the room can also help lower local humidity levels.

However, if the mold covers more than a square foot, has a musty odour, or you see it inside the AC unit or ductwork, this moves beyond a DIY fix. Mold on porous materials like drywall or deep within carpets usually requires professional assessment and removal. In Dubai, proper remediation follows international standards to ensure it's fully contained and removed. For health safety and to prevent recurrence, calling in a specialist with the tools for moisture mapping and lab identification is the most effective long-term solution.
