Black mold in wardrobe: remove myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading in the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the outside. It’s especially bad on our leather bags and shoes. I'm worried it's making us all stuffy in the mornings. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good in our humid climate, and should I call our building management first or a professional cleaning company?

That pattern of black spots on an outside-facing wall, especially affecting leather goods, is a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, very common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the outside heat meets the cooled interior air, causing moisture to condense inside the wardrobe—the perfect environment for mold.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a mild detergent solution or a mix of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Scrub the area, but never use bleach—it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into the porous wall. Dry the area immediately with a fan. Discard any heavily contaminated porous items like cardboard boxes. Clean leather items with a dedicated leather cleaner.

However, if the growth is extensive, has penetrated the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture source is persistent and requires professional assessment. The stuffiness you're experiencing is a strong indicator that spores are airborne.

You should notify your building management first. Under Dubai regulations, the responsibility for structural issues leading to dampness, like insufficient insulation on an external wall or a leak, typically falls on the property owner. They need to address the root cause. A professional indoor health company can provide a detailed inspection to identify the exact moisture source and type of mold, then perform the remediation with containment procedures to prevent spreading spores throughout your home. For a confirmed, recurring problem, this combined approach of fixing the building flaw and professional cleaning is the only permanent solution.
