How to safely clean moldy clothes and storage cupboard?« Back to Previous Page

Our twins have been having a runny nose and a weird cough for the past two weeks, and it’s not getting better. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a bunch of our jackets and sweaters covered in black spots. I’m panicking that this is the cause of their allergies. How do I safely clean everything and make sure the mold is completely gone from the cupboard?

First, stop the panic. You're right to suspect the mold is causing those symptoms, especially in children. In Dubai's climate, enclosed storage areas are prime real estate for mold due to high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. The mold spores become airborne and circulate, irritating respiratory systems.

For the clothes: Do not attempt to wash them with regular detergent. For non-valuable items, disposal is the safest option. For items you wish to keep, dry cleaning is the most effective method for killing mold on fabrics. If you must wash, do it outside, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Use a mold-killing solution like white vinegar or a specialized fungicide, then sun-dry them thoroughly.

For the cupboard: Empty it completely. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted bleach solution (ensure strong ventilation). Scrub all surfaces vigorously. Everything must be bone-dry before you even think about putting items back. A dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside the cupboard is essential for prevention.

Given the health symptoms and the extent of the growth you've described, this is likely a larger issue. The mold in the cupboard is the symptom; the cause is excess moisture in your home's environment. A professional inspection with air and surface sampling is strongly advised to identify the moisture source and the mold species, as some types are more allergenic than others. This is the only way to ensure it's completely resolved and safe for your twins.
