Is this black mold behind my wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles behind our bedroom wardrobe in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the AC has been struggling to keep up. I'm worried this might be mold and that it's why my husband has had a persistent stuffy nose lately. Should I be calling a professional cleaning company immediately, or is this something I can handle myself with bleach?

That black speckling is likely mold, given Dubai's high humidity and the location behind furniture where air circulation is poor. The persistent stuffy nose your husband is experiencing is a common reaction to mold exposure, which acts as an irritant to the respiratory system.

In the UAE's climate, condensation forms easily on cooler walls, especially when an AC unit struggles to dehumidify the air. This creates the perfect damp environment for mold to grow. Attempting to clean it yourself with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the fungal roots (hyphae) deep within. It can also release harmful fumes in an enclosed space.

For a growth area behind a wardrobe, a professional inspection is the prudent step. They can identify the mold type through lab analysis and, more critically, determine the exact moisture source—whether it's condensation, a hidden leak, or rising damp. Proper remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying specialized antimicrobial solutions, followed by verification that the space is dry and the spore count has returned to normal levels. Addressing the underlying cause is the only way to prevent it from returning.
