However, if the mould covers a larger area, has a strong, musty odour, has reappeared after previous cleaning, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible spots might only be a small part of the problem, with more growth inside the wall cavity. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of water intrusion and includes air or swab sampling sent to a microbiology lab to identify the mould species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. This diagnostic approach is crucial for resolving the issue permanently, not just cleaning the surface.
