Black mold on bedroom wall: clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the edges of the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately it seems to have gotten worse. Is this something I can just clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to make sure it's not a bigger issue?

Black mould on an exterior wall in Dubai is often a sign of condensation due to the high humidity and constant temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot outside wall. This creates a perfect environment for mould.
For a small, surface-level area (less than one square meter), cleaning it yourself can be effective. Do not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can feed the mould roots inside porous materials like drywall. Instead, use a detergent like diluted washing soda or a dedicated mould remover, scrub the area, and ensure it is completely dry. Address the moisture source by improving ventilation, using a dehumidifier, or checking that your AC is draining properly and set to a sufficiently low humidity level. However, if the mould covers a larger area, has a strong, musty odour, has reappeared after previous cleaning, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible spots might only be a small part of the problem, with more growth inside the wall cavity. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of water intrusion and includes air or swab sampling sent to a microbiology lab to identify the mould species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. This diagnostic approach is crucial for resolving the issue permanently, not just cleaning the surface. |
