Black bathroom grout: DIY bleach clean or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah apartment's master bathroom has turned completely black, and there's a persistent damp smell even though we run the exhaust fan. It's been getting worse since the humidity started rising a couple of months ago. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach solution from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company?

Black bathroom grout in a Jumeirah apartment is a classic sign of persistent moisture, and Dubai's high humidity makes bathrooms a prime location for this issue. While the black discoloration is often from mildew, it can also indicate deeper mold growth within the wall cavity, especially if there's a constant damp smell despite using the exhaust fan.

A bleach solution from ACE can clean surface mildew on non-porous tiles but is ineffective on porous grout. Bleach does not kill the root structure of mold and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. The persistent smell suggests the moisture source isn't just surface condensation but could be from a leaking pipe behind the tile or insufficient waterproofing, which a surface clean cannot address.

For a small, surface-level patch, a thorough scrub with a dedicated grout cleaner and improved ventilation may suffice. However, given the description—widespread black grout and a persistent odor—this likely requires professional assessment. DIY attempts often disturb mold colonies, releasing spores into the air and spreading the contamination to other parts of your AC-ventilated home.

In Dubai, remediation companies should follow international standards like the IICRC S520. A proper inspection identifies the core moisture source. Remediation involves containment to prevent cross-contamination, HEPA-filtered air scrubbing, and removal of affected porous materials like grout, followed by application of EPA-approved antimicrobials. The key is fixing the moisture issue first; otherwise, the mold will return. For a case this advanced, a professional inspection is the most reliable course of action to protect your indoor air quality.
