Is urgent professional black mold removal needed for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that’s been growing in the corners of our master bathroom shower. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting really bad this past month, probably because of all the humidity. I’m worried it’s making us sick. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a quick cleaning?

Black mold in bathrooms is a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round AC use, which creates persistent condensation. The urgency depends on the extent of growth and your children's symptoms.

For small, surface-level patches (less than a square foot), a thorough DIY cleaning with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution can be effective. However, if the mold has a strong, musty odor, has reappeared after previous cleaning, or is growing on porous materials like drywall or grout, it may indicate a deeper moisture issue. In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the hidden source of the problem.

Given that your children are coughing, it is prudent to address this seriously. Mold spores can aggravate respiratory systems, especially in children. While a direct medical link requires a doctor's diagnosis, removing the source of irritation is a critical first step. A professional assessment can determine the species and extent of the contamination, which is important for deciding the correct remediation protocol to ensure it is fully resolved and not just superficially cleaned.
