Should I take my toddler to a doctor for mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler and I have both had a constant stuffy nose and cough for the last month. I finally pulled our large wardrobe away from the wall in our bedroom in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black mold spreading from the corner where the AC unit’s pipe runs. I’m really worried about how dangerous this is for my son. Should I take him to a doctor for these symptoms, or will getting the mold professionally removed be enough?

Yes, you should take your toddler to a pediatrician. Prolonged respiratory symptoms like a constant stuffy nose and cough in a young child, especially when you've confirmed a significant mold source, warrant a medical evaluation. The doctor can assess his condition and determine if any treatment is needed to address the symptoms caused by the exposure.

The black mold you discovered is likely Stachybotrys, which is common in the UAE due to the high humidity and condensation from AC drain lines. This type of mold can produce mycotoxins that are particularly irritating to the respiratory systems of infants and children. While professional remediation is absolutely necessary to solve the root problem, a doctor's visit is the correct first step for your son's immediate health.

For the remediation, do not attempt to remove a patch that large yourself, as improper cleaning can aerosolize spores and worsen the contamination. The issue needs to be handled by a certified mold remediation provider who will follow Dubai Municipality guidelines for containment and removal. They should also identify and fix the moisture source, which is probably a clogged or leaking AC condensate drain pipe—an extremely common issue in our climate. After remediation, a post-clearance test from an independent lab is the only way to verify the air quality is safe for your family.
