Doctor for kids' cough from mold or clean it first?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and complaining of headaches for the past month, and I finally found black splotchy mold growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which shares a wall with the bathroom. I’m really worried this is the cause and I don’t know what to do first. Should I get them to a doctor immediately for this kind of exposure, or is cleaning it myself enough?

Consult a doctor first to document the symptoms and rule out other causes. Mold exposure, particularly for children, can cause persistent coughing and headaches, and a medical professional should assess their current health.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing the mold releases spores into the air, which can significantly worsen the contamination and your family's exposure. This is a serious case given the extent of growth and the symptoms you've described.

The high humidity in Dubai, especially from bathroom steam absorbed by shared walls, creates a perfect environment for this type of hidden mold growth. Professional inspection and remediation are necessary. They will contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials, identify the moisture source (like a plumbing leak or condensation from AC ducts), and verify the air quality is safe post-remediation with lab testing. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent it from returning.
