Is bathroom black mold dangerous for my child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Al Barsha is a few years old and the kids' bathroom has no window. For the last couple of months, I've noticed black, speckled patches growing in the grout between the tiles, especially behind the toilet, and there's a constant damp smell. My youngest has developed a persistent cough that seems worse in the morning. Could this be black mold and is it dangerous enough that I need to get a professional cleaner, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

The black speckled patches in a windowless bathroom are almost certainly mold, and given the damp smell and your child's persistent cough, it is a legitimate health concern. In Dubai's high humidity, bathrooms without ventilation are prime environments for mold growth. The constant condensation from showers, combined with year-round AC use creating temperature differentials, provides the perfect damp conditions for mold to thrive on porous surfaces like grout.

While the term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys, many dark-colored molds can cause similar symptoms. These molds release microscopic spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that irritate the respiratory system. A persistent morning cough in a child is a common reaction, as the irritants accumulate in the enclosed space overnight.

Bleach is not recommended. It is mostly water, which can feed the mold root system hidden within the porous grout, and its fumes are themselves a potent irritant. For a small, surface-level patch, a dedicated EPA-approved mold remover can be effective, but your description suggests a deeper, recurring problem.

Given the symptoms and the villa's construction, a professional assessment is strongly advised. Remediation involves more than cleaning visible spots; it requires identifying and correcting the source of moisture—often inadequate sealing or a lack of active ventilation—to prevent immediate regrowth. In the UAE, reputable providers should be able to diagnose the species and provide a scope of work based on lab analysis, which is the only way to confirm the specific type and potential risk level. For your child's health, addressing the underlying cause is essential.
