Is black mold in my closet a DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. I’m worried it might be mold, especially with the humidity creeping up again. Is this something I need to get a professional to look at immediately, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

The small black spots in your closet are likely mold, given Dubai's high humidity and the propensity for condensation in closed, poorly ventilated spaces. Stored fabrics like winter clothes can trap moisture, creating a perfect breeding ground.
For a very small patch (less than one square foot), a DIY approach can be attempted. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar is often effective; spray it on, let it sit for an hour, then scrub the area with a brush and wipe clean. Ensure the closet is completely dry afterward. Improve air circulation by leaving the door ajar and consider using a moisture absorber like silica gel. However, if the spots are larger, have penetrated the drywall, or if you notice a persistent musty smell, this indicates a deeper issue that a surface clean won't fix. In the UAE's climate, visible mold is often just the surface manifestation of a hidden moisture problem within the wall, possibly from a small condensation leak from an AC pipe in the ceiling void. For anything beyond a tiny, superficial patch, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the hidden water source. Without fixing that, the mold will return. A certified inspector can also take a sample for lab analysis to confirm the species, which is the only way to know if it's the more concerning Stachybotrys (toxic black mold) or a less hazardous type. |
