Black mold in Mirdif closet: DIY or pro, and expected cost?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has started to get these black spots on the back wall, and all our clothes smell damp. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I'm worried it's spreading but have no idea what it costs to get it professionally removed here. Is this a job I can handle myself with bleach, or should I just call a company and what’s a reasonable price to expect for a small area?

Black spots in a Mirdif closet with a damp smell are a classic sign of a mold issue, almost certainly fueled by the recent humidity spike. This is a common problem in Dubai villas, where concrete walls can trap moisture and closets on exterior walls are prone to condensation from the constant AC use.
For a small, contained area, a DIY approach can be attempted if the underlying moisture source is fixed. However, using bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water and can feed mold roots inside porous surfaces like drywall. A solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner is more effective for surface cleaning on non-porous materials. Crucially, you must identify and resolve the humidity source—this could be an AC condensate drain leak inside the wall, poor ventilation, or external water seepage. If the mold has penetrated the wallboard or plaster, or if the area is larger than roughly one square meter, professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house. They will contain the area, safely remove contaminated materials, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. Costs for professional remediation are not fixed and depend entirely on the extent of the contamination and the required repairs. For a small closet, the price is typically based on the scope of work, not a flat fee. The most reliable way to get an accurate cost is to request an on-site assessment from a company that can provide a detailed, lab-verified remediation plan rather than a simple quote. Always verify that the provider holds relevant DHA-approved certifications for biocleaning. |
