Is closet mold causing my scratchy throat?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall has been feeling damp, and I just pulled out some winter clothes to find a few jackets with fuzzy black spots on them. This must have been building up over the last month with all the humidity. My throat has been a bit scratchy in the mornings and I'm worried it's connected. Is this something I can clean with vinegar myself, or do I need to call a professional company to check for a bigger problem?

Black mold on clothing in a closet is a clear indicator of excess moisture and is very likely the cause of your scratchy throat. The dampness and fuzzy spots suggest active growth, and the spores released into the air can irritate your respiratory system, especially overnight while you sleep.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. The high humidity, combined with cold spots on outside walls from constant AC use, creates perfect conditions for condensation and mold growth inside closets and behind furniture. This is often more than a surface problem; the moisture source could be a small leak in the wall or condensation from the AC system itself.

For a small, isolated area on a few items, cleaning with a vinegar solution can be a first step for the clothing itself. However, simply cleaning the visible mold misses the root cause. The damp feeling on the wall means the problem is in the building materials, and the spores have already spread throughout the closet.

Given your symptoms and the recurring dampness, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact moisture source—whether it's condensation, a leak, or rising damp—and assess the full extent of the growth, which is often hidden inside the wall. A reputable inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the issue and can provide documentation on the types of mold present, which helps determine the best course of action for your health and home.
