Shuold I take my family to a doctor for mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Al Barsha has had a constant dampness problem since the heavy rains in January. I was moving some storage boxes in the upstairs guest bedroom and found a huge patch of black and green mold spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe. My youngest has had a runny nose and a nagging cough for over a week now that won't go away. Should I be taking my family to a doctor immediately for this, or is cleaning it ourselves the first step?

Your child's persistent symptoms combined with visible mold growth warrant a doctor's visit, especially for the youngest. A medical professional can assess if the cough and runny nose are allergic reactions or something more, and they can provide appropriate treatment. Document the mold with photos to show the doctor.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. The size and type (black and green spreading patch) indicate a significant moisture issue, likely from the January rains that penetrated the wall. Disturbing it will release a high concentration of spores into the air, potentially worsening your family's exposure and spreading the contamination.

The constant dampness in your Al Barsha villa is a core problem. Dubai's high humidity, combined with air conditioning that can create cold surfaces for condensation to form, allows mold to thrive indoors after a water event. This requires a professional inspection to identify the moisture source—likely a leak or insulation failure within the wall cavity—and a remediation plan to properly contain, remove, and treat the area. A company with its own microbiology lab can identify the species, which helps assess potential health risks and verify the cleanup's effectiveness through post-remediation testing.
