Mold on clothes: inspector or cleaner first?« Back to Previous Page

Our family has been living in Jumeirah Park for two years, and I just pulled out our winter clothes from the storage cupboard under the stairs only to find several jackets and a couple of bags have these black and greenish speckles all over them. The room has felt a bit damp since the humidity started rising a couple of months ago. Is it better to hire a professional mold inspector first, or should I just get a cleaning company to deal with it?

Start with a professional mold inspection. In Dubai's high humidity, visible mold on belongings is often a symptom of a larger, hidden issue within the wall or under the flooring of that storage space. A cleaner would only address the surface-level problem on your clothes and the cupboard, likely leading to a rapid recurrence.

An inspection by a certified professional will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact source of the dampness—often condensation from AC ducts, a small plumbing leak, or trapped humid air. They will also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This is critical; some types common in UAE homes, like Aspergillus, can cause more significant respiratory irritation than others.

Once the inspection report is complete, you will know the exact extent of the contamination and the specific type of mold present. This allows any remediation company to provide a targeted, effective quote to fix the root cause and safely remove the mold, rather than just guessing. For your affected clothes, a specialist restoration cleaner can likely salvage them with specific treatments, but tackling the environment first prevents everything from being re-contaminated.
