Is mold behind my curtain dangerous for my child?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Mirdif has had a constant dampness problem since the heavy rains in March, especially in the ground-floor guest bedroom. I just pulled back the heavy curtain that's always against the wall and found a huge patch of black and green mold growing behind it. My youngest son has been sleeping in there and has had a runny nose and a nagging cough for over a week now. Is this something I need to call a professional remediation company for immediately, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Yes, the mold behind your curtain is a significant health concern, especially for your child. The proximity to where he sleeps means he is inhaling its spores continuously, which is the most likely cause of his persistent respiratory symptoms like a runny nose and cough.

Given the climate in Dubai, this is a common issue. The recent heavy rains saturated building materials, and when heavy curtains are pressed against a wall, they trap humidity and prevent air circulation from the AC. This creates a perfect microenvironment for mold to flourish out of sight. The black and green coloration suggests a potentially problematic species that should be identified.

For a patch you describe as "huge," DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall; it does not kill the roots (hyphae) and can actually release more spores into the air. This can temporarily worsen your son's symptoms. The underlying moisture problem in the wall itself must also be addressed to prevent immediate regrowth.

You should contact a professional mold inspection company. A proper assessment involves moisture meters to find the water source and air or swab sampling to identify the mold type, which determines the remediation protocol. For a child's bedroom, this is a prudent step. Look for a provider that offers detailed lab reports from a certified microbiology lab, as this gives you a verifiable diagnosis of the problem and the necessary solution.
