Black fuzzy mold on wall in Dubai: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and the room always feels a bit damp even with the AC on. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, and at what point do we need to call in a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

That black fuzzy growth is likely Stachybotrys or another common damp-loving mold, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the temperature differential between your cooled room and the hot exterior wall.

Start by safely inspecting the extent. Move the wardrobe and assess the spread. For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, not bleach, as it only surface-bleaches and doesn't kill the roots. Scrub the area thoroughly and let it dry completely. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. This is almost certainly condensation from thermal bridging on that outer wall, a very common issue here.

Increase air circulation behind the furniture, ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature to reduce drastic swings, and consider using a dehumidifier in that room. If the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, stop DIY efforts. At that point, the hidden moisture damage within the wall cavity is likely significant and requires professional assessment and remediation to properly resolve the underlying issue and ensure it doesn't recur.
