How to safely remove closet mold without spreading spores?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to feel damp, and I just found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold behind some winter clothes. It's been especially humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation in there made it worse. What’s the safest and fastest way to clean this myself without making my family sick from the spores?

Mold in closets on exterior walls is common in Dubai due to high humidity and temperature differences causing condensation. The safest approach is containment and proper cleaning to prevent spore dispersal.
First, isolate the area. Keep the closet closed and seal the room from the rest of the house, especially if anyone has respiratory issues. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses during cleanup. Do not dry brush the mold, as this launches spores into the air. For a small patch (under one square meter), a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to ten parts water) can be effective. Apply the cleaner with a spray bottle to dampen the mold first, which helps weigh down the spores, then scrub with a disposable cloth. Dispose of all cleaning materials and any porous items (like the affected clothes) in sealed bags. After cleaning, address the source. Use a moisture meter to check the wall's dryness. Improve air circulation by leaving the closet doors ajar or using a small desiccant dehumidifier inside. Ensure your AC is running adequately to manage indoor humidity, which should ideally be kept below 60%. If the mold covers a larger area, has a persistent musty odor, or returns after cleaning, the moisture issue may be within the wall itself. In such cases, a professional inspection with thermal imaging and moisture mapping is recommended to identify the exact condensation source and ensure proper remediation. |
