Should I remove black bathroom grout myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah Park has turned completely black over the last couple of months. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just bleaches the mold white for a day and then it comes back darker. I'm worried it's getting behind the walls. Is this something I can handle myself with a stronger product, or should I just call a professional company for an assessment, and what's a rough cost for a bathroom this size in Dubai?

Black grout returning after a bleach scrub strongly indicates a deep-seated moisture problem, not just a surface issue. In Dubai's high humidity, this moisture is likely penetrating behind the tiles, feeding the mold from within the wall cavity.

DIY methods with stronger chemicals often fail because they don't address the root cause—the hidden moisture. Bleach is also ineffective on porous surfaces like grout; it only bleaches the visible surface mold while the roots remain. Aggressive scrubbing can further damage grout, creating more pores for moisture and mold to penetrate.

For a bathroom in a villa like yours in Jumeirah Park, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The goal is to identify the source of moisture, which could be a small leak from plumbing, insufficient waterproofing, or chronic condensation from your AC system. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and borescopes to see behind walls without unnecessary demolition.

Remediation cost is driven by the extent of the damage. If the moisture is localized, the fix may involve targeted removal and re-grouting with antifungal additives. If the problem is widespread behind the walls, it becomes a significant waterproofing project. The only way to get an accurate scope and cost is an on-site diagnosis from a company that can provide documented evidence of the moisture source and a clear remediation plan.
