How to clean and prevent AC mold on carpet?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I'm seeing these small, fuzzy black spots starting to form in the corner near the vent. We keep the room pretty cold, but the humidity feels higher there. What's the best way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold growth from an AC leak is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant condensation. The first step is to stop the moisture source; a certified HVAC technician should fix the leak. For the carpet, small, new growth can sometimes be addressed by a homeowner, but extreme caution is required.
For a small affected area, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area and avoid spreading spores. Blot any standing water, then clean the mold with a solution of detergent and warm water. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage materials. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely within 24-48 hours using dehumidifiers and fans. However, if the mold covers more than one square meter, the carpet is soaked underneath, or you smell a persistent musty odor, the carpet padding is likely contaminated. In these cases, professional remediation is strongly advised, as DIY can aerosolize toxins and spread the problem. To prevent recurrence, ensure the AC drain line is flushed annually to prevent clogs. Maintain your AC temperature no lower than 22°C to reduce excessive condensation. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid winter months. For persistent humidity issues, a professional inspection can identify the specific mold species and underlying moisture problems that need to be solved. |
