How to permanently stop wardrobe mold in a humid bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom wardrobe, especially on the back wall, keeps getting a black speckled mold even after I wipe it down. It’s been coming back every few months since last winter, and I’m worried it’s affecting our clothes and air quality. We live in a villa in Jumeirah, and the room feels a bit more humid than the rest of the house. What’s the best way to permanently stop this mold from returning, and should I be looking at a dehumidifier or fixing something with the AC?

Recurring mold on a wardrobe's interior wall strongly indicates a condensation issue, not just surface dirt. The wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the villa's exterior heat meets your cooled interior air, creating constant dampness that mold spores thrive on. Wiping it only removes the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem.

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall by a few inches to improve air circulation. This simple step can immediately reduce condensation buildup. For the humidity, a desiccant dehumidifier is highly effective in Dubai's climate, as it works better than refrigerant models in our consistently warm, humid air. Aim to maintain indoor humidity levels between 45-55%.

Your AC may also be a contributor. Ensure it's set to a consistent temperature (typically 22-24°C) and that the fan is set to "Auto," not "On," to allow it to properly cycle and remove humidity. The filter should be clean, and all vents in the room should be open and unobstructed.

For a permanent solution, the cold bridge itself needs to be addressed. This often requires a professional inspection to identify the exact cause, which could be insufficient insulation within the wall or gaps allowing humid air to seep in. Remediation specialists use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint these exact spots. Once the source is sealed and treated, the mold will not return. Until the root cause is fixed, any cleaning is temporary.
