Should we handle black mold ourselves or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our suitcases. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels a bit damp. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call our building management immediately?

Given the dampness and location on an exterior wall, this is likely a condensation issue common in Dubai's climate due to high humidity meeting cold AC-chilled walls. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can handle it yourself.
First, identify and address the moisture source. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and warm water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid direct contact. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan afterwards. However, if the drywall feels soft or the dampness returns quickly, the moisture intrusion may be inside the wall cavity, which is beyond a surface clean. Since this is a structural exterior wall, your building management should be notified. They are responsible for investigating and repairing potential leaks or insulation failures in the building envelope. Document the issue with photos and send a formal email to them. If the problem persists or the area is large, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent and identify the exact mold species, as some types common here require specific remediation protocols. |
