Should I get a mold inspection for my baby's room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right where the wardrobe meets the ceiling. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month, and my wife is really worried about our baby’s allergies. Is it worth getting a professional mold inspection, or can I handle this myself with some cleaner from Ace Hardware?

Given the location and the fact you have a baby with allergies, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Black spots spreading from a corner, especially near a wardrobe and worsening with humidity, are classic signs of an ongoing moisture issue, not just surface condensation. In Dubai's climate, this often stems from a small, hidden leak in an AC condensate drain line within the wall or a thermal bridge causing persistent dampness.

Attempting to clean visible mold without identifying and rectifying the source will result in it returning, often within weeks. For a child's room, identifying the exact species through lab analysis is crucial, as some types commonly found here can produce allergens and irritants that exacerbate respiratory sensitivities. A proper inspection will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden water source and air or surface sampling to determine the spore types and concentration.

You can manage this yourself only if the area is very small (less than one square foot) and the cause is definitively surface-level, like temporary condensation you can control with a dehumidifier. Since it's spreading from a structural corner and affecting a vulnerable occupant, the investment in a diagnostic inspection to find the root cause is the most effective and health-conscious approach.
