Found black mold in closet, what's the first step?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom’s walk-in closet has had this damp, earthy smell for a couple of months, and I finally pulled everything out to investigate. Behind the shoe rack on the interior wall, I found a patch of black, fuzzy-looking mold about the size of a dinner plate. I’m really worried, especially since my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. What’s the first step I should take to deal with this safely and who should I contact for proper removal in Dubai?

The first step is to avoid disturbing the area. Do not attempt to wipe or spray the mold yourself, as this can aerosolize the spores and spread them throughout your bedroom. Close the closet door and limit access to the room, particularly for your husband given his symptoms.

In Dubai's climate, interior wall mold is often a sign of a condensation issue, commonly caused by the temperature difference between a cold air-conditioned room and the humid external air, or from a hidden plumbing leak. The priority is identifying and fixing this moisture source; otherwise, the mold will return even after cleaning.

For a patch this size and due to the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. In Dubai, look for an indoor environmental professional who can conduct a diagnostic assessment to locate the moisture intrusion and perform air or surface sampling. They should be able to provide a clear remediation protocol and, crucially, verification testing afterward to confirm the space has been returned to a normal fungal ecology. The remediation company they recommend should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold remediation.
