How to permanently fix recurring black mold behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom wall behind the wardrobe has developed a large black mold patch since the weather cooled down in December. We live in a villa in Jumeirah, and I think the humidity from the AC is getting trapped there with no air circulation. I've cleaned it with bleach, but it keeps coming back. What's the most effective long-term solution to stop this for good?

This is a classic Dubai villa issue caused by the combination of year-round AC use and high ambient humidity. The cooling coils create condensation, and that damp, stagnant air gets trapped behind the wardrobe, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold. Bleach only removes the surface stain, not the root moisture problem or the microscopic spores within the porous wall material.

The most effective long-term solution requires a multi-step approach. First, you must permanently improve air circulation behind the furniture. This can be achieved by moving the wardrobe a few inches away from the wall or installing louvered doors to allow air to flow. Second, address the source of the moisture. Have your AC unit inspected to ensure it is draining properly and not over-cooling that specific area, which exacerbates condensation.

For a recurring patch of that size, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess if moisture has penetrated the wall itself. The core issue may be a slight crack in the external wall or inadequate insulation, allowing humid air to condense on the cooler interior surface during our winter months. Remediation would then involve fixing the structural leak, treating the wall cavity with specialized antimicrobial solutions, and applying a mold-resistant primer and paint. A company with its own microbiology lab can identify the specific mold type and verify the remediation was successful through post-treatment testing.
