Safe way to remove black mold near a toddler?« Back to Previous Page

Our toddler has been having a persistent cough and I’m worried sick. I finally checked behind the wardrobe in his bedroom and found a big patch of black mold, probably from our AC unit leaking a while back during the humid weather. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this without putting my family at risk from the chemicals or the spores?

For a toddler's room, safety is paramount. Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as disturbing it will aerosolize spores that your child will inhale. The immediate priority is to isolate the area. Keep the toddler out of the room, close the door, and cover the opening with plastic sheeting if possible.

In Dubai's climate, this mold is likely fed by condensation from your AC unit, a very common issue. The safest and most effective removal requires professional containment. Reputable remediation teams will seal off the room with negative air pressure to prevent spores from spreading to the rest of your home. They use HEPA filtration to clean the air and specialized methods to remove the mold growth itself, not just bleach it superficially.

Given the health concern, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the exact moisture source (like a clogged AC drain line) and assess if the mold has spread inside the wall or AC system. For a child's persistent cough, knowing the species through a lab test can be valuable information for your pediatrician, as some types are more allergenic than others.

Once the mold is professionally removed, the long-term solution is controlling humidity. Ensure your AC is serviced regularly to prevent future leaks and consider using a dehumidifier in the room during the most humid months.
