Should I clean this damp AC mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, speckled mold growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s in the corner furthest from the window and feels slightly damp. The AC vent is right above it, which I think might be causing condensation. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, or is this something I can handle myself with bleach this weekend?

That patch of damp, black mold at the ceiling-wall junction is a classic sign of condensation from your AC. The cold air from the vent is hitting the warm surface, creating the moisture that mold needs to grow. This is a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, do not use bleach. It is mostly water, which can feed the mold roots inside the porous drywall, and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. Instead, use a dedicated mold remover or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and then monitor it closely. The critical step is fixing the condensation source—ensure your AC is not set too low and that airflow is directed away from that corner.

Given the location is damp and the growth is inside your bedroom, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible patch is often just the surface manifestation; the moisture can have spread inside the wall cavity. A proper assessment with a moisture meter is needed to determine the extent. For health safety and to ensure the root cause is resolved, especially in a sleeping area, having it professionally diagnosed and remediated is the most reliable course of action.
