Black mold in wardrobe on damp wall: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the back of the master bedroom wardrobe. It's on the outer wall, and the room always feels a bit damp even with the AC on. What's the most effective way to deal with this myself, or should I call a professional company right away?

That damp feeling and black spots on an exterior wall in a Jumeirah villa are classic signs of condensation mould. The wall is likely colder than the room's air, causing moisture to condense inside the wardrobe, especially with year-round AC use.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), you can attempt DIY. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the area with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mould remover. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Wipe down the wall for condensation daily, leave wardrobe doors ajar for airflow, and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier inside the cupboard.

Given the persistent dampness and location on an exterior wall, this often indicates a more serious issue like a hidden plumbing leak or insufficient insulation, which is common in older Dubai villas. DIY cleaning will only temporarily remove the visible mould, not the root cause.

A professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source of the dampness behind the wall. Without fixing that, the mould will return. For health safety and a permanent solution, an inspection is the most effective route.
