Cuold bedroom closet mold cause my allergy symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed what looks like black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, where we keep all our winter clothes. I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes for the past month, and it's only getting worse. The AC unit is right near that wall and it feels damp. Could this mold be the cause of my allergy-like symptoms, and should I be seriously worried about our health?

Yes, the mold in your closet is very likely causing your allergy symptoms. The proximity to the AC unit is a critical clue; the constant cooling of that wall likely creates condensation inside the wall cavity, providing the moisture mold needs to grow. The spores then become airborne, especially when the AC kicks on, and circulate in the bedroom, directly explaining your worsening stuffy nose and itchy eyes.

For a situation like this, a visual inspection isn't enough. The visible growth is often just the tip of the iceberg, and the main colony could be hidden within the wall or the AC system itself, which requires professional assessment to properly locate and diagnose. Given the UAE's high humidity and year-round AC use, this type of concealed moisture problem is common.

You should prioritize two actions. First, arrange for a certified mold inspector to conduct air and surface sampling. This is the only way to identify the species present and the full extent of the contamination. Second, have your AC system inspected for leaks, drainage issues, and internal microbial growth, as it is likely a contributing factor. Until then, keep the closet door closed, avoid disturbing the mold, and consider using a dehumidifier in the room to help reduce moisture levels.
