Black mold in closet from AC dampness: how to fix?« Back to Previous Page
|
We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s an interior wall, but we're in an older building in Bur Dubai and the AC vent is right above it, which constantly makes that wall feel damp and cold. What's the most effective way to tackle this myself before it gets worse, and should I be worried about the AC unit itself being the cause?

This is a classic Dubai condensation issue. The cold air from the AC vent is hitting that wall, causing it to drop below the dew point and form moisture, which then feeds the mold. Your first step is to move all clothing and items away from that corner immediately to prevent spores from spreading and to allow the area to dry.
For a small, contained area, you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Scrub the visible mold off the wall surface. However, this only addresses the surface growth. The underlying dampness must be fixed, or it will return quickly. The core issue is the temperature differential. To prevent recurrence, you need to stop the condensation. Redirect the AC vent airflow away from the wall using deflectors. Improve air circulation in the closet by leaving the door ajar occasionally or using a small desiccant dehumidifier pouch. For interior walls, insulating the cold surface can be a permanent fix. You should be concerned about the AC unit. The constant moisture cycle suggests the drain pan or drain line could be compromised, potentially harboring mold that is then blown into the room. While cleaning the visible growth is a start, the AC system itself likely requires a professional inspection and cleaning to address the root cause and prevent ongoing spore dispersal. In older Bur Dubai buildings, this is a very common systemic problem. |
