Is black mold in my bedroom corner urgent?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black speckles growing along the corner where our bedroom wall meets the ceiling in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's not a huge area yet, but with the humidity kicking in again, I'm worried it will spread quickly. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

This type of growth is common in JVC apartments and is often a surface mold caused by condensation where the cold interior wall meets the humid air. The urgency depends on the extent of the moisture source.
For a small area, you can clean it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves, and use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner. Scrub the area and let it dry completely. The critical step is identifying and addressing the moisture. This is almost always from condensation due to AC airflow and temperature differentials in our climate, not a pipe leak. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature (typically 22-24°C) to minimize drastic temperature swings that cause condensation. If the speckles return within a few weeks, the mold may be growing behind the paint, or there could be a more significant humidity issue in the wall cavity. At that point, a professional inspection is wise to assess the wall's moisture content and identify the species. Some companies use thermal imaging to find hidden cold spots and moisture meters to verify the wall is dry before any remediation. In Dubai, recurrent mold issues often require both cleaning and an assessment of the room's ventilation and AC performance to prevent it from coming back. |
