What's the best way to kill bathroom mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

Our family bathroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this musty smell for weeks, and I've finally found the source: a bunch of black and greenish mold spreading along the ceiling and the grout behind the toilet. It must have gotten worse from the humidity after all our recent showers. What's the most effective way to kill this mold for good, and should I be worried about my kids' health with it being in the air?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is a persistent issue due to our high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. For a surface-level patch, start by scrubbing with undiluted distilled white vinegar; it’s effective on many common household molds and is less harsh than bleach. For grout, a paste of baking soda and water can help with scrubbing. Always wear a mask and gloves during cleaning to minimize exposure.

However, killing visible mold is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. Ensure your bathroom’s exhaust fan is working properly and run it during and for at least 30 minutes after showering. Wiping down wet surfaces and fixing any plumbing leaks are critical steps to prevent its return.

If the mold covers an area larger than a square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the growth may be more extensive inside walls or ceiling cavities. In these cases, a professional inspection with moisture mapping is needed to find the hidden source. For families with young children or anyone with respiratory sensitivities, identifying the mold species through lab testing is advised to understand any specific health risks, as some types can cause irritation.
