How to safely remove and prevent wardrobe mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Discovery Gardens. It’s been really humid lately and I guess the AC isn’t reaching back there. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely and stop it from coming back?

Mold behind furniture in Discovery Gardens is extremely common due to the high humidity and stagnant air. To remove it safely, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For surface mold on painted walls, scrub with a mixture of water and detergent. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage paint.
To stop it from returning, you must address the humidity. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow for air circulation from your AC. Use a hygrometer to monitor the room's humidity; aim to keep it below 60%. Since the AC isn't reaching that spot, a small, portable dehumidifier can be very effective in that enclosed space. For extensive growth (covering more than a square meter), or if the mold has visibly penetrated the drywall or plaster, professional assessment is recommended. Remediation experts can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the spore types and concentration, which is crucial for determining the correct removal protocol and ensuring it is thoroughly addressed. This is particularly important for households with allergy sufferers or compromised immune systems. The goal is to fix the moisture source and create an environment where mold cannot thrive. |
