How to permanently stop closet AC drip and black mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet seems to be constantly dripping, and I've just discovered a patch of black mold on the back wall behind my clothes. We keep the AC running almost 24/7 to deal with the humidity, but this feels like a losing battle. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good and stop the condensation from happening in the first place?

The constant drip is from condensation due to the AC's cold air hitting the humid Dubai atmosphere inside the closet. To stop it permanently, you must fix the underlying humidity and temperature imbalance.

First, address the immediate mold. For a small patch, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can clean the surface. However, mold on porous surfaces like drywall often roots deeper. If the patch is larger than one square meter, professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent releasing a large amount of spores into your home.

The long-term solution is stopping the condensation. Ensure the closet door is kept open as much as possible to allow conditioned air from the room to circulate and equalize the temperature and humidity. If the door must stay closed, have an HVAC technician install a vent in the door or closet wall. Check that the bedroom's AC unit is correctly sized and functioning; an overworked or faulty unit may not be dehumidifying the air properly, exacerbating the problem. Insulating the AC ductwork in the closet can also prevent the cold surface that causes condensation to form.

For a definitive diagnosis of the mold type and to verify the root cause, a professional inspection that includes moisture mapping and, if necessary, lab analysis of a sample is the most effective approach. This identifies the exact species and ensures the remediation and repair plan is correctly targeted.
