Is AC mold causing our sickness in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell that we didn't notice before. Since the weather got really humid a couple of weeks ago, my husband and I have both had constant sore throats and stuffy noses that won't go away. I just pulled the air filter out and the edges around it are covered in black and green fuzzy spots. Is this type of mold dangerous and should we be asking our landlord to get the entire AC unit professionally cleaned, or is just replacing the filter enough?

The fuzzy black and green spots in your AC are a clear sign of microbial growth, which is a common issue in Dubai's high humidity. The damp smell and your persistent sore throats and congestion are strongly correlated with this contamination.

While not all molds are highly toxic, many common AC contaminants like Cladosporium and Aspergillus are respiratory irritants. They thrive in the condensation that builds up in AC systems, especially during humid periods, and are then blown directly into your living space. This is likely the source of your symptoms.

Simply replacing the filter is not enough. The filter is just one part of the system; the mold you see indicates colonization in the deeper components like the cooling coils and drip pans, which are dark, damp, and ideal for growth. A surface clean won't address this.

You should formally request that your landlord arrange for a professional inspection and full ducted AC system cleaning. Under Dubai rental regulations, landlords are typically responsible for maintaining the central AC system in good working order. A proper cleaning involves accessing the internal coils and drip pan, using specialized vacuums and cleaning agents, and should be performed by a company that can verify the results.

Until it's resolved, keep the AC off if possible and increase ventilation. A professional assessment can determine the extent of the issue and the necessary remediation steps.
