How to clean mold from AC vents in Jumeirah Park?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been blowing out a faint, damp smell for the last couple of weeks. I finally took a look inside the vent with a flashlight and I can see patches of black dust or mold around the edges. We run the AC constantly, especially now in the summer, and I'm worried it's spreading spores. What's the best way to clean the AC unit and vents to kill the mold and stop this from happening again?

The black substance in your AC vent is likely a combination of dust and microbial growth, a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC operation creating condensation. The first step is to visually inspect the extent. For surface-level growth on the vent cover and a few inches into the duct, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Remove the vent cover and wash it with a solution of warm water and detergent, scrubbing the black spots. Wipe the visible interior duct surfaces with a damp cloth and the same solution. Ensure everything is completely dry before reassembling.
However, this only addresses what you can see. If the smell persists or you suspect growth deeper in the system, the issue could be in the evaporator coils or drip pan inside the AC unit itself. This requires a professional inspection and cleaning. DIY attempts on the internal unit can damage sensitive components. The key to prevention is controlling moisture. Ensure your AC’s condensate drain line is not clogged, as standing water is the primary cause. Maintaining a lower indoor humidity level, ideally below 60%, can help reduce the conditions that allow mold to regrow. Given the climate, an annual professional AC and duct cleaning is a prudent measure for most homes to manage this recurring risk. |
