Can I remove recurring black bathroom grout mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom’s grout has been getting these black spots for a couple of months, especially behind the toilet where it’s a bit damp. I’ve tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just comes back a week later. My building is in Jumeirah and is pretty old, so I'm not sure if the ventilation is just bad or if there's a bigger leak. Is this something I can fix myself with a better product, or should I just call a professional?

Recurring black mold in bathroom grout is a common issue in Dubai, primarily due to the high humidity and poor ventilation that traps moisture. What you're seeing is likely a surface mold, but its persistence suggests a deeper moisture problem that bleach cannot address.

For a DIY approach, start by improving ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it's actually moving air. Wipe down wet surfaces, including behind the toilet, immediately after use to remove standing moisture. For cleaning, switch from standard bleach to a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, as bleach only removes surface discoloration without killing the root structure in porous grout. Thoroughly scrub the affected grout lines and let the product sit for the recommended dwell time.

If the mold returns within a few weeks despite these measures, the issue is likely excess ambient humidity or a hidden leak. In older Jumeirah buildings, poor wall insulation can lead to condensation inside walls, and cracked pipes behind tiles are a frequent source of unseen moisture. At this point, a professional inspection is advised to identify the hidden moisture source with thermal imaging and moisture meters. They can determine if the problem is simply high humidity, which an upgraded dehumidifier might solve, or a structural leak requiring repair. For confirmed mold in wall cavities, remediation and grout sealing are necessary to prevent regrowth.
