How to permanently remove bathroom black mold causing cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold that’s started growing in the corners of our master bathroom. It's worst behind the toilet and near the shower where the tiles meet the wall. We keep the exhaust fan on, but with all this humidity lately, it just isn't enough. What's the most effective way to kill this mold and stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in bathrooms is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use, and it can certainly be a trigger for respiratory irritation and coughing.
For immediate removal, clean visible mold with a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner—never mix chemicals. Scrub the area thoroughly. However, killing surface mold is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture problem isn't solved. Your exhaust fan may not be powerful enough for the room's size or might not be venting properly to the outside. To prevent recurrence, you must control humidity. Wipe down wet surfaces after every shower, fix any leaking pipes or seals immediately, and ensure your bathroom is well-ventilated. Consider installing a more powerful exhaust fan or a small dehumidifier. In many UAE villas, the mold growth behind walls is actually fueled by a poorly insulated AC cold water pipe sweating inside the partition, which is a hidden issue simple cleaning cannot address. If the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), has a persistent musty odor, or if health symptoms continue after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify hidden moisture sources and perform air or surface sampling to confirm the mold type, which is important for understanding potential health risks and ensuring the remediation is complete. |
