Black mold in closet: urgent fix or tell landlord?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to smell really damp, and I just pulled out a winter jacket to find a bunch of black fuzzy spots all over it. We live in an older building in Jumeirah, and this seems to have gotten worse since the humidity spiked last week. What's the fastest way to deal with this myself, and is this something I should immediately report to my landlord?

This is a common issue in older Dubai buildings, especially during humid periods. The damp smell and black fuzzy growth indicate active mold, likely due to condensation forming on the cooler outside wall behind your closet, creating a perfect environment for it.
For an immediate DIY fix, move all affected items out. For clothing, a hot wash with detergent can kill mold spores; dry cleaning is also effective for non-washables. Wipe down all closet surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), ensuring excellent ventilation. A dehumidifier or constantly running a portable AC unit in the room can help dry the area out quickly. You should report this to your landlord. Under UAE tenancy law, structural issues leading to dampness—like inadequate insulation on an external wall or faulty external waterproofing—are typically the landlord's responsibility to rectify. The DIY cleanup treats the symptom, but the underlying moisture source needs to be addressed to prevent rapid regrowth. Given the visible growth and musty odor, a professional inspection is wise. They can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact condensation source and advise on the necessary repairs. Without fixing the root cause, the mold will almost certainly return after the next humidity spike. |
