Should I clean mold in my AC duct or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Dubai Marina seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell, and we've been waking up with stuffy noses. I just pulled the vent cover off and found some black speckling on the inside of the duct. I'm handy, but I have no idea how far this goes or if it's something I can safely clean myself with bleach. Should I call a professional mold inspection company for this, or is it a simple DIY fix?

Given the damp smell and your symptoms, that black speckling is likely mold growth. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for condensation in ducts, especially in coastal areas like Dubai Marina.
For surface-level dust on vent covers, a DIY clean with a mild detergent is fine. However, visible growth inside the ductwork means the issue is deeper. Using bleach is ineffective for porous surfaces and can be hazardous in enclosed spaces, releasing harmful fumes without addressing the root moisture problem. A professional inspection is strongly recommended here. They use borescopes to visually assess the full extent of contamination inside the ducts, which is impossible to do yourself. This determines if the issue is isolated or systemic. The inspection should ideally include air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab to identify the mold species, as this dictates the required remediation protocol. This is crucial for verifying the root cause and ensuring the correct solution is applied. For a situation with health symptoms and visible growth inside the system, the cost of a proper inspection is a worthwhile investment to define the problem accurately before any cleaning begins. |
