How to prevent mold in a closed bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an internal wall, has started getting small patches of black mold on the leather bags and shoes I have stored in there. The dehumidifier in the room is always running, but it seems like the lack of airflow inside the closed closet is the real problem, especially during the humid summer. What’s the best way to protect my stored items and prevent this from coming back every year?

The lack of airflow in a closed closet during Dubai's humid summer is the primary cause. Your dehumidifier handles the room's ambient air, but stagnant, humid air trapped inside the closet creates a perfect microclimate for mold on leather and other organic materials.

First, address the active mold. Wipe down affected leather items with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated leather cleaner, then allow them to dry completely outside of the closet. Do not return them until the source is fixed.

To prevent recurrence, you must improve conditions inside the closet. Start by ensuring it is not overfilled, as cramped spaces restrict air movement. Leave the closet door ajar for several hours each day to allow room air to circulate. For a more permanent solution, install a small, battery-operated closet dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant pod, which will actively absorb moisture from the enclosed space. Silica gel packs placed among stored items can also help.

For severe or persistent cases, the issue may originate from a different source. Condensation can form on internal walls if there is a temperature differential from an adjacent AC duct or if the room’s own cooling is insufficient. A professional inspection with thermal imaging can identify these hidden cold spots and condensation risks, which is a common diagnostic step for recurring problems in UAE homes.
