Should I clean bedroom mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind my wardrobe in the bedroom has started to show these black speckles, and I'm pretty sure it's mold. It must be from all the humidity we've had lately, even with the AC running constantly. I'm worried about it spreading to our clothes and if it's a health risk. Should I try to clean this myself with bleach or is it time to call a professional?

Black speckles behind a wardrobe are a common issue in Dubai's climate, often caused by condensation forming on the cooler wall surface hidden behind the furniture. This trapped moisture, combined with our high ambient humidity, creates an ideal environment for mold.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. However, do not use bleach. It is mostly water, which can feed the mold roots inside the porous wall, and its fumes are hazardous in a bedroom. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. You must move the wardrobe to fully access the wall, clean the entire affected area, and ensure it is completely dry to prevent immediate regrowth. Given the location—a bedroom where you spend hours sleeping—and the concern for your clothes, a professional inspection is strongly advised for two reasons. First, the visible speckles are likely just the surface manifestation; the mold may have penetrated deeper into the gypsum board or behind it. Second, a lab analysis can identify the species, which is critical for assessing potential health risks, especially for anyone with allergies or asthma. A proper remediation will address the hidden moisture source and remove the contaminated materials safely to prevent spores from spreading throughout the room. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and a certified professional will ensure the cleanup meets those standards, protecting your health and your home. |
