Is tihs black mold making us sick, need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache for the past month. My wife says it’s just the AC, but I’m really worried it’s the mold making us sick. Is this the dangerous 'black mold' I keep hearing about, and should we get a professional to test it or just clean it ourselves immediately?

The black mold you're describing on an exterior wall, combined with your symptoms, is a legitimate health concern that warrants immediate action. While the term "black mold" is often used generically for dark-colored molds, the notorious and potentially toxic species Stachybotrys chartarum does appear black and thrives on chronically damp, cellulose-rich materials like drywall or wood—exactly what's in your closet.

Your symptoms—morning headaches and congestion—are consistent with mold exposure, as spores can irritate the respiratory system. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls are common condensation points due to the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior. This creates a perfect, hidden moisture source for mold.

Do not clean it yourself. Disturbing the patch will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening your exposure and spreading the problem. The priority is to identify and fix the moisture source, which is likely condensation or a minor seepage issue.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will use moisture meters to pinpoint the wall's dampness source and may recommend lab testing to identify the species, which determines the remediation protocol. In the UAE, remediation companies should follow internationally recognized guidelines like the IICRC S520. The cost to properly fix the moisture issue and remediate the mold is almost always less than the potential health impact and property damage from letting it continue.
