How to remove black mold in closet and check inside walls?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces outside, and it’s been really humid lately. What’s the best way to handle this myself, and should I be worried about it being a bigger problem inside the walls?

The black mold in your closet is likely due to the high humidity and a possible cold bridge on that external wall, a very common issue in Dubai villas. The wall's interior surface cools from constant AC, while the outside heat and humidity cause condensation inside, creating a perfect environment for mold.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar with three parts water, or use a diluted bleach solution (one cup bleach to one gallon of water). Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. Avoid just painting over it, as the mold will return.

To check inside the walls, you will need a professional inspection. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation of a larger problem within the wall cavity. An expert will use a borescope to look inside the wall for hidden growth and a moisture meter to identify the exact source of the dampness—whether it's condensation, a tiny leak, or capillary action from the foundation.

Given Dubai's climate, the root cause is almost always excess moisture. After proper remediation, improving ventilation in the closet and using a dehumidifier can help prevent recurrence. If the area is larger than a square foot or you suspect hidden growth, a certified assessment is strongly recommended to determine the full scope and ensure it is addressed safely.
