Can I remove black mold myself and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I’m worried it’s from the black mold spots I just found in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah, and it’s been so humid the last few weeks. What’s the best way to clean this off and prevent it from coming back for good?

For a small, contained area like a closet, you can attempt to clean it yourself, but the cause must be addressed to prevent it from returning. The location on an exterior wall in Jumeirah points to condensation from the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid outside air, a very common issue here.

To clean, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Do not dry brush it, as this releases spores. Instead, use a damp cloth with a solution of white vinegar or a detergent like soapy water to wipe the area. After cleaning, ensure the surface is thoroughly dried.

Preventing its return is the critical part. You must reduce the moisture. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and leaving the door ajar occasionally. A renewable desiccant dehumidifier pouch placed inside can help absorb excess dampness. Most importantly, identify and address the condensation source. Check for any cracks in the exterior wall sealant that may be letting in humid air and have them sealed.

Given that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, this situation warrants more caution. The type of mold matters, and what you see might not be the full extent. For health concerns and recurring issues, a professional inspection with moisture mapping and possibly air or surface sampling is advised to identify the species and the exact moisture source for a targeted, permanent solution.
