How to treat and prevent mold on bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for about a year and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. The room always feels a bit more humid than the rest of the house, even with the AC running constantly. I’m worried about it spreading and causing health issues. What’s the most effective way to treat the existing mold and prevent it from coming back on this interior wall?

Mold behind furniture in a humid room like yours is a very common issue in Dubai villas, often caused by a combination of condensation from the AC and lack of air circulation. The most effective approach addresses both the existing growth and the underlying moisture source.

For the existing mold, first move the wardrobe away to expose the entire affected area. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For small, surface-level spots, scrubbing with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution can be effective. Never use bleach, as it only removes the color and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. For extensive growth penetrating the paint or drywall, the wall material itself may be compromised and require cutting out and replacing. This is a key point where a professional inspection is wise to assess the extent.

Preventing its return is the most critical step. The constant humidity means the wall is likely colder than the room's dew point, causing condensation. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to reduce the room's humidity load. The single biggest improvement will be increasing air circulation behind the furniture; even a small gap of a few inches between the wardrobe and the wall makes a significant difference. A small dehumidifier in that room can also help manage the ambient moisture level. For a permanent solution, consider having a professional assess your wall for insulation issues, as some villa constructions have cold bridges that are perpetual condensation points.
