Black spots in closet: urgent or wait for professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the AC has been struggling to keep up. My main concern is whether this is something I need to deal with immediately this weekend, or if it's okay to wait and call a professional during the week.

Address it immediately. The combination of high humidity and an interior wall in Dubai creates a perfect environment for mold growth. While not all black mold is the toxic Stachybotrys variety, any active growth indicates a moisture problem that needs to be resolved.

This weekend, you can take initial steps. Wipe the visible spots with a microfiber cloth dampened with a diluted white vinegar solution. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't address the root cause and can worsen indoor air quality. Immediately improve ventilation in the closet; leave the doors open and use a fan to circulate air. A portable dehumidifier in the room can also help lower the humidity level significantly.

However, because this is on an interior wall, the visible growth could be just the tip of the iceberg. The moisture source might be condensation from an AC duct within the wall, a small plumbing leak, or simply vapour drive from the humid air condensing on the cooler wall surface. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the true moisture source and assess the extent of the growth. They can perform a moisture mapping assessment and, if necessary, take air or tape-lift samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which dictates the remediation protocol.

For a definitive answer on the type of mold and the correct remediation method, you should schedule an assessment. A proper inspection will determine if this is a surface issue you've contained or if it requires professional intervention to prevent recurrence and protect your indoor air quality.
