Can I remove black mold myself with bleach and vinegar?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's on the wall facing the outside, and we've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after this last humid spell. Is this something I can tackle with bleach and vinegar from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

Black mold on interior walls, particularly those facing the outside, is a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and temperature differentials that cause condensation within the structure. While small surface growth can sometimes be managed, it is not recommended for several reasons.
Using household bleach or vinegar is a temporary fix that often fails. These solutions only remove the surface discoloration and do not address the moisture source or the mold's root system (hyphae) growing within the wall. The moisture trapped inside the wall will cause the mold to return, often worse than before. For any area larger than a square meter, or if the wall feels damp, professional assessment is strongly advised. Given that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms like coughing, the situation warrants more caution. Disturbing the mold during a DIY cleaning attempt can aerosolize spores and mycotoxins, potentially worsening indoor air quality and health effects. A proper remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and removing affected porous materials like drywall if the infestation is deep. The most critical step is identifying and resolving the moisture intrusion, which could be a leaking pipe, capillary rise from the foundation, or condensation from thermal bridging. A professional inspection can pinpoint this source. For health-related concerns, a lab analysis can identify the mold species and its potential to produce allergens or toxins, which provides a clear direction for remediation. In such cases, a targeted professional approach is the most effective and safest long-term solution for your family's health. |
