Black mold on carpet: DIY with bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the edge of the carpet in our master bedroom, right where the wall meets the floor. It's on the side of the room facing Deira, and it's gotten worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can handle with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company in Dubai to check it out properly?

Black mold on a carpet-wall junction is a common issue in Dubai, often caused by a combination of high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a small, new patch (less than a square foot), a DIY approach can be attempted. However, using bleach is not recommended. It's mostly water, which can feed the mold roots in porous materials like carpet and drywall, and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces. A more effective DIY solution is a mix of white vinegar and water or a dedicated fungicidal cleaner.

Given that the growth is along the wall and has worsened with humidity, the underlying cause is likely moisture intrusion. This could be from a hidden pipe leak, condensation from an AC duct running under the floor, or moisture wicking up from the slab. Simply cleaning the surface will not solve the problem; the moisture source must be identified and rectified.

For a recurring or spreading issue of this nature, a professional inspection is strongly advised. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact source of water without destructive probing. They can also take tape or air samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which dictates the appropriate remediation protocol, especially important for families with allergies or respiratory sensitivities. Addressing the root cause is the only permanent solution in Dubai's climate.
